DENVER – The University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be put to the test this season with five home meets and seven out-of-town meets, according to the 2013-14 schedule, which was released by DU head coach Brian Schrader today.
“We have a challenging dual meet schedule for both the men’s and women’s teams this year leading into the Summit League Championships,” Schrader said. “Season to season our teams have found a way to get better, and with a young team depending on a lot of first year athletes, it is going to be a fun year to see how they rise up to the challenge.”
The DU men’s and women’s squads will open the 2013-14 season by hosting the Denver Relays on Saturday, Oct. 12 at El Pomar Natatorium.
Following the Denver Relays, both teams hit the road. The Pioneer women first go to Colorado State on Oct. 19 before competing in a tri-meet against Arizona State and UNLV on Oct. 25 and 26in Tempe, Ariz.
To finish out 2013, the women’s team will host Air Force on Saturday, Nov. 2. Both the men’s and women’s squads will then head to Iowa City for the Iowa Invitational on Dec. 6-8.
Taking a break from the stress of competition, the Pioneers will then travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico for their annual training trip on Dec. 11-19.
“Really excited to take our team to train in Puerto Rico—just a great experience for a student athlete, and one that doesn’t come around very often,” Schrader said.
Denver returns to action after the holidays and begins 2014 with back-to-back home meets, hosting BYU (M/W) and University of New Mexico (W) on Friday, Jan. 17 and Wyoming (M/W) on Saturday, Jan. 18. The teams then follow up by traveling to face UNLV (M) and Boise State (W) on Jan. 25.
The Pioneers will hold their annual “Senior Day” meet on Friday, Jan. 31 when they compete in their final regular-season home dual against Utah (M/W).
Following the last men’s regular season meet against the Air Force in Colorado Springs on Feb. 1, both Pioneers teams will compete at the Summit League Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. from Wednesday, Feb. 19 to Saturday, Feb. 22.
The swimming and diving postseason will continue into late March at the NCAA Championships (March 20-22/W) (March 27-29/M).
“We have some veterans that are remembering some tough, close, losses last year, and we have those events in mind,” Schrader said. “We will be looking to peak and swim fast at the Iowa Invite, and at our Conference Meet and NCAAs, and really use our dual meet season for some benchmarks and a competitive toughness check.”
Following the postseason, the Pioneers will host their annual alumni meet on Saturday, April 12, welcoming back past DU swimmers and divers to compete.
