HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Denver men's soccer was edged 1-0 when Southern Methodist's Pana Vazquez buried a goal in the 91st minute of regulation during an exhibition on Saturday night.

The game remained scoreless through the first 90 minutes, but the game stretched an additional two minutes into stoppage time. Sophomore Gavin Dawson (Carrboro, N.C.) started in goal and split time in the first half with junior Teale Stone (Tulsa, Okla.), while junior Joe Willis (St. Louis, Mo.) played the entire second half.

“I thought the intensity and pace of the game was very good for an exhibition," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "I was pleased for much of the game with how we played, despite our team being just three days into our preseason. As a staff we were able to get a good look at our group as all 27 players were able to get solid minutes. It was a fun night of soccer in Houston and we look forward to getting back to work this preseason to continue to develop our team.”

Denver had its best chance on a breakaway by freshman Nick Brant (Denver, Colo.) in the 75th minute, but the SMU keeper made the save.

“It was a great event and thanks to Scott James and Chuck Vallentine with Texas Soccer Club for setting it up," Muuss said. "With the connections we have to Houston and the state of Texas, this match was a fantastic opportunity and experience for the DU program.”

The Pioneers next host Stanford in their final exhibition game on Aug. 29. Denver opens the regular season at the Duke Classic in Durham, N.C., facing North Carolina State on Sept. 4 and Duke on Sept. 6.
