DENVER - Led by a season-high six points from senior Mark Matthews (Oshawa, Ontario) off of five goals and one assist the No. 9 University of Denver men's lacrosse team took down Bellarmine University 12-6 on Friday evening at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

"Overall the effort was there," said head coach Bill Tierney. "We didn't finish well early when we had some chances and then they got the ball in their hands and it turned into a wild game. When it came back to 7-6 I thought our guys really showed some fortitude, stood up and scored five straight goals for the win."

The Pioneers (7-3, 3-1 ECAC) got two goals and two assists from senior Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) and two goals and one assist from sophomore Jeremy Noble (Orangeville, Ontario). Freshman Wes Berg (Coquitlam, British Columbia) added a goal and an assist for Denver as junior Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.), sophomore Harrison Archer (Washington, D.C.) and freshman Sean Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, N.Y.) had a goal each in the win.

Senior Patrick Rogers (Portland, Ore.) tallied an assist and led the Crimson and Gold with five ground balls. Freshman Eric Adamson (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) added an assist while sophomore Matt Kramer (Littleton, Colo.) led Denver with two caused turnovers and freshman goalie Ryan LaPlante (Fort Collins, Colo.) made a career-high 16 saves.

Denver was outshot by Bellarmine (3-5, 0-4 ECAC) and was 8-of-22 on face-offs compared to the Knights' 14-of-22 on face-offs. Each team snagged 34 ground balls.

Bellarmine opened up the scoring with a goal from Mitch McLaren, but Denver answered with three tallies of its own, one from Cannizzaro and two from Matthews as the Pioneers claimed a 3-1 advantage after the first period.

Matthews racked up a hat trick with a goal to start the second quarter and Law made it five unanswered goals for the Pioneers moments later to give Denver a 5-1 lead. Cameron Gardner and Bellarmine stopped the DU onslaught with 2:58 to play before halftime, but the Crimson and Gold maintained the upper hand and led 5-2 at intermission.

Matthews wasted no time getting on the board in the second half, burying his fourth goal of the game nine seconds in to give the Pioneers a 6-2 lead. Demopoulos got in on the action as well before two goals from Austin Bright and one tally apiece from Colton Clark and Gardner closed the gap for Bellarmine and made it a 7-6 Denver game. Demopoulos stopped the Knights' run with 1:04 to play in the third and the Crimson and Gold led 8-6 with a period to play.

Denver made it a 9-6 game when Berg netted a goal 10 seconds into the final period. Matthews grabbed his fifth goal of the game, before Noble and Archer scored to make it five goals in a row for the Pioneers to close out the contest.

The Pioneers finish up their three-game home stand by welcoming  No. 4/4 Loyola to Peter Barton Stadium on Saturday, April 14 at 7 p.m. MT.
