DAVIS, Calif. - University of Denver sophomore Jenn Etzel (Bel Air, Md.) scored a career-high six goals while adding an assist, leading the Pioneers to a 20-12 victory over UC Davis on Sunday afternoon.
Redshirt junior Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) tallied four goals and four assists, while senior Melissa Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had a hat trick and freshman Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.) added two goals and a pair of assists for the Pioneers (12-1, 6-0 MPSF). Senior Ashley Harman (Boyertown, Pa.) made nine saves in the contest.
"UC Davis is always a tough opponent, and today was no different," head coach Liza Kelly said. "I was pleased with our attack. They were able to make some shooting adjustments in the second half that really changed the game."
After a tight first half, UC Davis (5-9, 2-4 MPSF) scored three goals in the first 2:55 of the second half to tie the game at 9-9. However, Etzel broke the tie less than three minutes later with her first of five second-half goals, and the Pioneers rolled with an 11-3 run to finish the game.
In addition to extending Denver's winning streak to 12 games, Sunday's win clinches DU's spot in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, and sets up the season finale on Saturday at Oregon (11-4), which is also a perfect 6-0 in the MPSF, for the regular season title.
The Pioneers conclude the regular season at Oregon on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT. The game will be webcast live on Pioneer Vision.
