DENVER - The University of Denver women's gymnastics squad had six gymnasts earn Western Athletic Conference All-Academic honors this season, the conference office announced this week.

Senior Louise Mercer (Nottingham, England), junior Simona Castro (Santiago, Chile) and sophomores Moriah Martin (Lake Mary, Fla.), Kaitlin Moorhead (Palo Alto, Calif.), Melodie Pulgarin Linero (Barcelona, Spain) and Paige Tollefson (Longmont, Colo.) earned the conference honors. The award is given to individuals who have completed at least one academic year, have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests and hold at least a 3.00 grade point average.

A total of 31 gymnasts and 263 winter athletes received the conference award.

"I'm proud of these student-athletes, and their commitment to both a high-level of athletics and a high-level of academics," head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "One of our goals each season is to be among the nation's elite both in the gym and in the classroom. These awards represent a step in the right direction."

Last month, the Pioneers claimed their first conference title in school history, finishing the competition with a score of 196.350. Denver won eight event specialist of the week honors and three gymnast of the week awards.

Martin, who finished with six of those 11 awards, will compete in the NCAA Semifinals this Friday at 4 p.m. MT at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Ga.
