Shaw, who begins his duties at DU on April 23, will serve as the strength coach for Denver's hockey, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's swimming and diving programs, and coordinate the intern education program.
"I am so excited to have Matt on board," Whartenby said. "His energy and enthusiasm for strength and conditioning was apparent the first time we spoke. I think his passion, combined with his well-rounded knowledge and experience, will really help our student-athletes excel in the weight room and on the playing field."
Shaw was responsible for improving the size, speed, strength and power for the men's basketball, wrestling and men's soccer teams at BU. He started his tenure at BU as a graduate assistant, managing the strength and conditioning for men's soccer, wrestling and golf, and assisted with men's basketball and men's and women's swimming and diving.
Prior to BU, Shaw interned at South Carolina during the summer of 2010, where he primarily assisted with implementation of the football team's summer and preseason programs. He also worked closely with the men's soccer and track & field teams on their respective summer programs.
Shaw has earned certifications from the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Association of Speed and Explosion.
The St. Louis, Mo., native earned his bachelor's degree in health sciences from BU's Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation with a minor in human physiology in January 2010. He also recently completed his master's in physical education and coaching from BU's School of Education in May 2011.
