DENTON, Texas -University of Denver women's tennis secured the fourth and final spot in the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Semifinals, posting a 4-2 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Friday afternoon at the Waranch Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of North Texas.
The Warhawks (15-4) took the early 1-0 lead, claiming two of the three doubles matches to earn the point. The all-conference doubles tandem of Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany) and Steffi Rath (Hochst, Austria) won the Pioneers (12-10) lone doubles match by a count of 9-8.
Sophomore Elena Najera (San Diego, Calif.) nailed down a straight-set victory over Silvia Tumova at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Junior Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden) earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ema Turudija at No. 4 singles, and sophomore Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) tallied a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Vivian Polak.
Rath erased a set deficit at No. 5 singles, claiming the Pioneers final point with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision over Monica Winkel.
With the victory, Denver eliminated ULM from the SBC Women's Tennis Championship for the second-consecutive season.
The Pioneers will take on No. 1 seed North Texas in the SBC Semifinals on Saturday at 8 a.m. MT.
