Pioneers Announce Summer Sports Camps

DENVER - The University of Denver Athletics and Recreation Department will offer camps for 11 different sports this summer: men's and women's basketball, hockey, gymnastics, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's soccer and volleyball.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (June 11-14, 15-17; June 29-July 1; Aug.19)

The Joe Scott Basketball camp will focus on developing fundamental basketball skills while emphasizing the fun of the game. All players will be challenged on a daily basis to reach their highest potential by an outstanding staff of college and high school coaches as well as past and present players from the University of Denver. The day camp will be offered to players in grades 2-8, while the elite camp is structured toward players in grades 9-12. Additionally, a team camp will be offered to junior varsity and varsity teams looking to gain valuable game experience as well as individual player development.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (Jun 15-17 and 25-28)

Denver women's basketball will offer a day camp for players in grades 1-8 and an elite camp for those in grades 9-12. The day camp will focus on developing basic fundamentals through the integration of games and station work, while the elite camp is designed to polish the skills of the experienced and competitive ball player.

HOCKEY (July 16-20 and 23-27)

The George Gwozdecky Hockey Camp offers an all-day (half day for the mite age group) fun and competitive experience for every level of player in a great learning and developmental environment. The camp will be available to players born from 1998 to 2006, and will focus on developing and advancing skills while learning from some of the best college hockey players and coaches in the nation. GYMNASTICS (June 21-24 and 18-21)

The Denver Gymnastics Camp, open to girls ages 7-18, offers instruction from Denver head and assistant coaches as well as special guests from the DU gymnastics team. Both a residential and commuter camp will be offered. Gymnasts will be sectioned into different areas based on skills and interest, and will have access to state-of-the-art AAI Elite Equipment and technology such as Dart Fish to give the gymnasts slow motion feedback in order to perfect their form.

MEN'S LACROSSE (June 14-17, 21-24; July 6-9 and 13-16)

Denver men's lacrosse will offer three camps this summer: an overnight camp, a team camp and a day camp. The two overnight camp sessions will be held on the University of Denver campus, and will be offered to players in grades 4-12.  The team camp will be held at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, and will provide high school and club teams the chance to come out to beautiful Colorado and be seen by college recruiters from Division I, II and III schools from all over the country. WOMEN'S LACROSSE (July 16-19)

The Denver Swagger girl's lacrosse camp will offer professional instruction for all levels of players looking to improve in all aspects of their game. Participants can enroll in the overnight camp or the commuter camp, and will be coached by the Denver women's lacrosse coaching staff as well as members of the 2012 Pioneer women's lacrosse team.

MENS AND WOMENS TENNIS (June 4-8, 11-15, 18-22 and 25-29; July 23-27)

The DU tennis program will host junior camps for boys and girls ages 9-18 as well as high schools boys and girl's camps this summer. The Junior Camp programs provide individual technical instruction and stroke analysis and development for beginner and intermediate players, while the High School program is geared towards the more competitive player. Coaches will include the Pioneer head coaches Danny Westerman and Jeremy Wurtzman, as well as current members of the DU tennis teams and other collegiate players. MENS AND WOMENS SOCCER (June 18-22; July 1-4, 10-12, 12-14; July 20-22)

The University of Denver soccer program will offer five different camps this summer: a Boys and Girls Youth Day Camp for players ages 5-12, a Boys Residential Camp for boys ages 9-13, a Girl's Residential Camp for girls ages 11-18, a Boys Advanced Residential Academy for boys ages 14-18, and a Boys High School Team Camp. Each camp will be directed by DU head coaches Bobby Muuss and Jeff Hooker, and will also feature instruction from DU assistant coaches, players and other top youth coaches from Colorado. VOLLEYBALL (June 19-20; July 7, 12-15, 16-18, 19-20, 23-25 and 28)

The Jesse Mahoney Volleyball Camps will offer a variety of camp sessions this summer: a Mini Pioneer Volleyball Camp for girls ages 5-10, a Skills Camp for girls in grades 7-12, an All Skills Development Camp for girls in grades 9-12, and a Junior Pioneer Camp for girls in grades 6-8. The Mini Pioneer Camp will include instruction on the basic fundamentals of the game and introduce the basics of the team game. The Skills Camp will focus on individual aspects of the game, including setting, attacking, blocking and transition attacking, and defense. The All Skills Development Camp will be geared towards the high school player who has an intermediate to advanced understanding of the game. Finally, the Junior Pioneer Camp will give participants an opportunity to improve their basic volleyball skills and develop their education of the entire game. Each camp will feature instruction from head coach Jesse Mahoney, members of the Denver volleyball staff, and both current and former DU players.
