DENVER - Ahead of Saturday's 40th anniversary of the signing of Title IX legislation, the University of Denver Division of Athletics has announced its plans to celebrate its women's athletic programs in 2012-13.

The University of Denver will recognize and honor DU women student-athletes who are beneficiaries of Title IX legislation since the University of Denver officially sanctioned women's intercollegiate athletic programs in 1974-75.

In addition, the Pioneer Professors program, which begins its third year this fall, will recognize DU faculty representatives who have pioneered educational benefits and opportunities for students since the passage of the Title IX legislation.

DU will also create a commemorative display of photos, documents and memorabilia representative of the legacy of Title IX at the University, while also allowing for online access to historical photos, documents and educational materials related to the implementation of Title IX.

Throughout the course of the 2012-13 athletic year, DU will present visual images and announcements at DU women's athletic events that will pay tribute to DU student-athletes and Title IX benchmarks at the University. In February, the school will hold a celebration of Title IX in conjunction with a DU women's athletic event, celebrating National Girl and Women's Sports Day.

Denver sponsors nine women's varsity sports programs, including basketball, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, tennis, skiing, soccer, swimming and diving and volleyball.
