As the University of Denver prepares to welcome the class of 2016, the men's basketball program is greeting the team for the second time. This year marked a change for basketball programs across the country, as coaches were permitted to work with their student-athletes in a team format for a limited period of time during the summer months. For the Pioneers, this was a great way to introduce the new players to Head Coach Joe Scott's system.

"Time on the floor is critical to developing the type of team cohesion that is needed to play in our system and on the Division I level," said Scott. "For our young guys the summer was a learning experience, so that they will be more ready to compete and contribute this fall."

Part of the summer on-campus experience for the team was getting in some extra classroom work. While the freshmen were being introduced to college academics, the veterans were also in the classroom to remain sharp off the court. Last year DU men's basketball student-athletes were once again leaders in their league with regard to academic performance. Eight members of the team were named to either the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List or Honor Roll, given to players with a 3.0 grade-point average or higher.

Now it's on to specific workouts in advance of the season's start in October, once fall classes officially begin. Over the next several weeks the coaches will work on the players' individual skill development separately and in small groups. October 12 marks the first day the team is allowed to be back on the court as a cohesive unit.

Cohesion will be needed for the 2012-13 season, as the Pioneers will take on the most competitive schedule in school history. On the docket for nonconference matchups are Pac-12 powerhouses Stanford and California, set for home Nov. 16 and away Dec. 2, respectively. The home schedule also features marquee games against Mountain West Conference rival Colorado State (Nov. 21), and Western Athletic Conference rivals Utah State (Jan. 19) and New Mexico State (March 2). The away slate includes challenging road trips to Conference USA's Southern Mississippi (Nov. 27), Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Iona (Dec. 11) and the Mountain West's Wyoming (Dec. 18).

Men's basketball season tickets for the 2012-13 Denver Pioneers are currently on sale. DU continues its commitment to provide the community with the most affordable and exciting entertainment in the Denver metro area. Ticket packages start at just $64.

Individual game tickets will go on sale in October with prices starting at $9 for adults. DU students get into games free with their Pioneer Card.
