Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season at Longhorn Invitational

DENVER - The University of Denver women's tennis team opens the 2012 fall season at the Longhorn Invitational at Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 21-23.

The tournament features 64 players from Texas, LSU, Oklahoma, TCU, North Texas,UTSA, West Virginia, SMU, Houston, Rice, Tulane and Denver. 

Play begins each day at 7:30 a.m. MT and concludes at roughly 6 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Seniors Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany), Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden) and Steffi Rath (Hochst, Austria) lead the Pioneers into action. Bergner was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Singles Team and joined Rath on the All-SBC Doubles Team last season. Bergner led DU with a 13-9 record at No. 1 singles and was 11-9 with Rath in doubles.

Rath led DU with 15 singles wins, while Isberg added 13 wins and junior Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) added 11, respectively. Sophomores Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) and newcomer Mandy van den Eerenbeemt (Best, The Netherlands) round out the roster.

Head coach Jeremy Wurtzman has posted a 29-38 record in three seasons at DU. He is assisted by former Notre Dame standout Christian Thompson.
