LAS VEGAS - The University of Denver women's tennis team returns to action at the 2012 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships from Oct. 10-14 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.
Seniors Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany), Steffi Rath (Hochst, Austria) and Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden), junior Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.), and sophomores Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) and Mandy van den Eerenbeemt (Best, Netherlands) are among more than 120 women's collegiate tennis players competing at the championships. Student-athletes from 20 western teams will face off as individuals from Wednesday through Sunday on 12 courts each day in both singles and doubles.
Bergner leads DU with a 6-3 singles record, while van den Eerenbeemt has added a 4-2 mark. The doubles tandems of Berger and Rath and Isberg and Garpenlovhave three wins each, respectively.
This will be one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking in October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2012 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 8-11, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Wednesday's first round gets under way at 10 a.m. MT. A second round of singles will follow and doubles are scheduled to begin the following day, followed by another round of singles. There will be consolation draws in singles and doubles to ensure each entrant at least two matches.
The finals are set for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
