Men's Basketball Blog: On the Road at Iona

Release: 11/09/2012

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The men's basketball blog is back, as Joe Scottbegins his sixth season with the Pioneers.

The team is currently going through shootaround at the Hynes Athletic Center, a 2,611-seat arena in the middle of Iona's campus.

It's always a little strange starting the season with new faces. For the first time under this coaching staff, Rob Lewis is not on the team. Neither are Travis HallamTyler Thalken, Alex Pickert, Justin Coughlinor Brian Stafford.

Those guys were great members of the team, but it's also exciting to see the new faces, as freshmen Jalen LoveBryant RuckerDom Samacand Nate Engesser suit up with Denver across their chests for the first time.

The team flew from Denver to LaGuardia Airport late yesterday and bussed the 11 miles northeast in the dark. Obviously, the East Coast saw some devastating destruction from Sandy last week, and a bad Nor'easter was expected a few days ago. Fortunately for those in this area, according to some of the people in town, neither storm did much significant damage - at least not to the extent of what happened south of here.

New Rochelle is located just north of the Bronx, on the south end of West Chester County and with the Atlantic Ocean bordering it to the east. The town was the setting of the Dick Van Dyke Show, although when The Voice, Mitch Hyder, went looking for 148 Bonnie Meadow Road, he was disappointed to discover it did not exist. He settled fortripping over an ottoman in his hotel room instead.

About Iona - Iona College is a small school on a 35-acre campus with just over 3,000 students.

Pioneer fans probably remember the hard-fought game between DU and the Gaels at Magness Arena last season, when Iona won on a buzzer beater in overtime. The Gaels went on to win the MAAC regular season and received an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament, where they fell in a wild game against Brigham Young in the first round.

Among those that have walked the beautiful campus of Iona are Jason Motte, who earned the save for the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 7 of the 2011 World Series; Don McLean, who belted out "American Pie" 40 years ago; Robert Greifeld, the president and CEO of NASDAQ; Tommy Dreamer, who apparently was "the first person in professional wrestling history to kick out of the pin that follow the Superfly Splash of Jimmy 'Superfly' Snuka," according to Wikipedia; and John Gilchrist, who played Little Mikey in Life cereal commercials.

Mariano Rivera Jr. also plays baseball for the Gaels on a field that is about 20 minutes north of his father's workspace inside Yankee Stadium.
