DENVER - The University of Denver men's tennis team didn't waste any time getting down to business during Day 1 of the Key Biscayne Invitational at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park.
The Pioneers opened the afternoon by sweeping three doubles matches from LSU, highlighted by the tandem of Enej Bonin (Koper Slovenia) and Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) besting Chris Simpson and Stefan Szacinski, who entered the event ranked No. 33 nationally, by the count of 8-6.
Max Krammer (Perchtoldsdorf, Austria) and Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) teamed up to post an 8-4 win over LSU's Roger Anderson and Tam Trinh and Henry Craig and Alex Clinkenbeard (Loveland, Colo.) handled the Tigers' Mark Bowtell and Boris Arias by an identical 8-4 margin.
Denver followed by claiming three of seven singles matches with Texas, including Bonin, ranked No. 47th nationally, defeating Sucdawwa Sitaram 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Vorkefeld handed Lloyd Glasspool a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 defeat and Craig rounded out the Pioneers singles winners with a 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 win over Texas' Daniel Whitehead, who entered ranked No. 43 nationally.
On Monday, Denver is scheduled to square off against Texas in doubles (12:30 p.m., ET) and Michigan in singles (1:30 p.m., ET).
Tuesday is the final day of competition and will see the Pioneers take on Michigan in doubles at 10:15 a.m. (ET) and LSU in singles at 11:15 a.m. (ET).
The event will crown an individual champion as no team scoring will be used. Each player will be assigned points per win according to his position in singles and doubles. The player with the most points at the end of the weekend will be named the overall winner.
