SAN MARCOS, Texas - University of Denver sophomore guard Brett Olson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) set career highs with 22 points and seven assists, leading the Pioneers to a 79-64 victory over Texas State at the Strahan Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
Junior forward Chris Udofia (Irving, Texas) tallied 12 points, six rebounds, four blocks and three steals for the Pioneers (13-8, 9-2 WAC). Sophomore Royce O'Neale (Killeen, Texas) added 14 points and five assists, and freshman Jalen Love (Wichita, Kan.) scored 12 points.
"We played well. We did what we needed to do in both games," head coach Joe Scott said. "We came out in the second half and guarded dribblers and took care of the ball, which is exactly what we talked about at halftime. Give our guys credit for staying focused."
Denver shot 55.3 percent (26-of-47) from the field, 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from three-point range and 80.0 percent (20-of-25) from the free throw line.
The Bobcats (7-16, 3-8 WAC) stayed in the game by going 23-for-28 (82.1 percent) from the free throw line, and Joel Wright had a double-double with 33 points and 12 rebounds.
DU jumped to a quick 11-5 lead just six minutes into the game, but the Bobcats stormed back to tie it at 11-11. The Pioneers responded with a 14-3 run to give them their largest first half lead at 25-13 with 7:12 to go. Olson scored 10 points, and Denver went to the break with a 35-28 lead.
The Pioneers opened the second half on a 13-4 run to stretch the lead to 48-32 with 13:28 remaining. Texas State rallied with a 9-2 run, cutting DU's lead to nine points with 6:07 on the clock, but Olson beat the shot clock with a layup and Love hit a pair of free throws to push it back to double digits.
Denver returns home to Magness Arena to host Seattle on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. MT and Idaho on Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. MT.
