DENVER - Head hockey coach George Gwozdecky, head men’s lacrosse coach Bill Tierney and head men’s basketball coach Joe Scott all addressed the media Tuesday afternoon as the University of Denver held its weekly press conference at the Champions Room at Magness Arena.
Gwozdecky opened the press conference by addressing Denver’s matchups with North Dakota this weekend.
“It’s a great tradition that these two teams have,” Gwozdecky said. “There have been some great games between these two teams, not only in the regular season, but in the postseason as well. We had two very hard-fought games earlier this season in Grand Forks, and it will probably be the same way this weekend.”
Tierney talked about the Pioneers’ first home game of the 2013 season, Saturday vs. No. 8/12 Lehigh.
“It’s great to be back at home, at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium,” Tierney said. “Saturday looks like it will be a great day. Lehigh is 2-0 right now, and they’re a really good lacrosse team. If our guys are made of what we think they are, they will come out this weekend and play Lehigh really tough.”
Scott spoke about sophomore Brett Olson’s (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) buzzer-beating three-pointer that beat Utah State on Thursday.
“You don’t diagram a play like that,” Scott said. “That was just players being players, and good players playing well. Our guys just knew that if we just stayed focused, one of them would make a play. Brett played great the whole game and he seems to thrive in those situations. He seems to be the calmest and most in-control guy on the floor and that rubs off on everybody else.”
