Denver - The University of Denver's No. 53 men's tennis team fell to No. 41 Northwestern 5-1 at CAC Inverness on Friday.
Pioneer senior Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) returned to the lineup partnering with freshman Henry Craig in the No.2 doubles spot. However, the Pioneers were unable to win any doubles flights, giving Northwestern an early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, the Pioneers were without senior No. 47 Enej Bonin (Koper, Slovenia). Therefore, senior Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) played No.1 singles in Bonin's place but fell to No. 114 Spencer Wolf, 6-1, 6-7, 10-8. Craig gave the Pioneers their lone singles victory, defeating Sidarth Balaji 3-6, 7-6, 10-5 in No. 3 singles play, and improving his rookie season singles record to 8-2.
"Overall we did a pretty good job competing with a few key guys out of the lineup." said Head Coach Danny Westerman. "We need to have better starts in both singles and doubles to put more pressure on our opponents. When we do that, we will be very tough to beat with any lineup we put out."
The Pioneers look to regroup when they return to the court Saturday for a match against Wichita State. The match will take place at CAC Monaco at 6 p.m. (MT).
