Denver – The No. 59 University of Denver women’s tennis team will celebrate Senior Day prior to its match against Utah on Friday at Gate Tennis Center.

Seniors Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany), Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden) and Steffi Rath (Hochst, Austria) will participate in their final regular-season dual as members of the Pioneers.

Overall, these seniors have meant a lot to our program.” said head coach Jeremy Wurtzman. “[Friday] is a great way to finish our season. It’s a great way for our seniors to go out playing a team the level of Utah.”

Bergner is a four-year starter who has thrived in her singles role each season. Bergner has a 74-60 career singles record with a personal-best 24-8 record this season.

[Sophia] was here, my first day on the job,” said Wurtzman. “She has played No. 1 singles and doubles for the last three years and she’s held that spot very well. Her tremendous passion and work ethic for DU and the game of tennis has been great for our team.”

Isberg is also a four-year starter. She has 68-47 career singles record, and is a team-best, 24-6 this season. Isberg has picked up many clutch victories in her four year career with Denver.

Each year [Emma] has worked extremely hard and gotten better and better,” said Wurtzman. “This senior year has been incredible with her winning percentage, and how many matches she has come through in the clutch over her past four years is remarkable. Her competitiveness in every match has been incredible.”

Rath joined the Pioneers during the 2010-11 season and has boasted a 50-27 career singles record and is 19-7 in singles this season. Rath has also played impressive doubles during her tenure at Denver. Her and Bergner have filled the No. 1 doubles role the past two seasons, and posted 34-26 overall record. They are currently holding a team best 19-8 this season.

Steffi came in as one of the top juniors in the world.” said Wurtzman. “Her talent level is extremely high and each year she’s matured and improved as a collegiate player.”

Senior Day and the Pioneers final regular season match against Utah is Friday, April 19. The match begins at 12 p.m. at Gates Tennis Center. Fans are encouraged to come early to honor the senior players.
