GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The No. 4 seed University of Denver men's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament against No. 2 seed California on Saturday in Gainesville.

The Pioneers, who advanced to face California following a 4-3 win over No. 1 seed Florida on Friday, opened the day by capturing two-of-three doubles matches to claim an early 1-0 lead, before dropping the first four singles matches.

The loss snapped a 10-match unbeaten streak for Denver as it had posted a 9-0-1 mark over its previous 10 dual matches.

The majority of the singles action was played indoors as weather conditions forced the competition to be moved after completion of double play and approximately a set into the singles matches.

The Pioneers captured two-of-three doubles matches to open the afternoon with a 1-0 advantage.  The tandem of Enej Bonin (Koper, Slovenia) and Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) defeated California’s  Campbell Johnson and Christoffer Konigsfeldt 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles flight and DU sealed the point with a convincing 8-3 win in No. 2 doubles action by the duo of Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) and Max Krammer (Perchtoldsdorf, Austria).

In singles, Konigsfelt posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over DU’s Vorkefeld in No. 2 singles.  California also registered straight-set wins in the No. 3, 4 and 5 singles flights to close out the match.
