DENVER – University of Denver men’s basketball player Chris Udofia (Irving, Texas) was selected by the team to serve as DU captain for the 2013-14 season, while Brett Olson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Cam Griffin (San Antonio, Texas) will serve as assistant captains, head coach Joe Scott announced today.

“We are fortunate to have a leader like Chris serve as captain for two seasons. Also, Brett and Cam have proven that they are ready to step into bigger roles,” Scott said. “As our program continues to grow, the leadership keeps getting better. These three are good players who work hard and care about their teammates, and we know that they will help future leaders like Jalen Love keep improving.”

Udofia, who was also the Pioneers captain this year as a junior, was voted to the All-WAC First Team and WAC All-Defensive Team, while leading the Pioneers to a 22-10 overall record and a share of the WAC regular season title, finishing 16-2 in conference play. Udofia, who earned a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 6 First Team, helped lead the Pioneers win their first-ever game in a national postseason tournament as a No. 3 seed in the NIT. Udofia ranked 34th in the nation and third in the WAC in blocked shots (2.34 per game), and ranked second in the WAC in assist/turnover ratio (1.81), fourth in steals (1.62), fifth in field goal percentage (.516), and ninth in both scoring (13.3) and assists (3.28 per game). Udofia’s 75 blocks were the fourth most in DU single-season history, and his 186 career blocks are second behind Yemi Nicholson’s all-time record of 210.

Olson, an alum of Highlands Ranch High School, was selected to the All-WAC Third Team this year after ranking second in the league in three-pointers made (2.38), third in three-point field goal percentage (.434), seventh in both field goal percentage (.477) and minutes played (33.88), and 14th in both scoring (11.4) and steals (1.19).

As Denver’s first player off the bench, Griffin provided a spark, averaging 6.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game, which was the seventh most in the WAC.

The Pioneers finished the 2012-13 season 22-10 overall and captured a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 16-2 record. Denver earned a No. 3 seed in the National Invitation Tournament, winning the team’s first-ever NCAA Division I postseason victory in the first round against Ohio.
