DENVER - University of Denver Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Recreation Peg Bradley-Doppes announced today that Associate Athletic Director for Student Support Services, Community Relations and Diversity Cindi Nagai has been appointed Senior Woman Administrator for the University’s Athletics Department. Nagai is assuming the SWA role from longtime collegiate sport administrator and coach Pam Wettig, who is reducing the number of hours in her work week.

“We are fortunate at the University of Denver to have many worthy candidates who could have assumed this post, but Cindi has clearly demonstrated a capacity and passion for the role of Senior Woman Administrator,” said Bradley-Doppes. “Cindi is so very well connected in the campus community, serving on key boards and initiatives focused on myriad issues. These links, in combination with her community and student outreach agendas, make her an outstanding replacement for our long-time SWA Pam Wettig, who I can’t thank enough for her years of dedicated service in the position.”

Overall, Nagai has more than 25 years of sport administration experience. She has worked within the DU Athletics Department for 15 years, currently coordinating all aspects of student support services for the University. A critical member of the Athletics and Recreation Division leadership team, Nagai focuses her daily efforts on programs designed to further academic advising, student-athlete progress toward degree completion, student life skills initiatives, and the hiring and retention of qualified tutors and work study students. Nagai was recognized in 2008 with the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators Judith M. Sweet Commitment Award.

“It’s a tremendous honor for me to take the reins of Senior Woman Administrator from Pam Wettig,” said Nagai. “She has done an excellent job in this role and I look forward to continuing the great work Pam has done in this area. I want to thank Vice Chancellor Peg Bradley-Doppes for allowing me the opportunity to continue the strong leadership that Pam has set forth in this position.”

Wettig, who has served as the SWA for DU since her arrival at the University in 2000, will continue to be a member of the Athletics Executive Senior Staff. Moving forward, Wettig will concentrate her efforts on the career opportunities for student-athletes, a program she currently oversees. In addition, Wettig will continue to support strategic athletics initiatives that go to advance the Division’s goals.

“Having served in this role for more than a decade at DU, I am extremely excited to see another top female administrator in Cindi Nagai have the opportunity to grow professionally and further her career objectives,” said Wettig.

Nagai has held several important positions within collegiate athletics, all geared to help engage the community and student-athletes. In her 15 years at Denver, she has overseen the premium ticket sales operations for hockey, women’s basketball and men’s basketball; worked tirelessly in support of special events such as the Athletics Hall of Fame, the Highlands Ranch Golf Club dedication, the Vince Boryla Recruiting and Donor Lounge opening, and many reunion and alumni activities; and coordinated community service programs that attract the next generation of Pioneers, such as Rising Stars and other grade school-oriented initiatives. Prior to her arrival at DU, Nagai was director of sports medicine and head athletic trainer at Metropolitan State University of Denver, where she began her work in support of student-athlete success.

Educationally, Nagai earned her Master of Arts in sport sciences from DU in 1990 after completing her undergraduate work at Metro State. In addition, she has served on and involved herself in many key committees and programs including the NCAA Certification Committee, the DU Accreditation Committee and recently participated in the 2013 NCAA Minority Leadership Seminar.

Nagai will officially assume her duties as the SWA July 1, 2013.
