DENVER – Junior Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) and senior Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) have been voted as co-captains of the University of Denver women’s tennis team for the 2013-14 season by their teammates, head coach Christian Thompson announced today.

“I'm delighted for Caroline and Michelle to lead our 2013-14 season as captains of the DU women’s tennis team,” Thompson said. “Caroline and Michelle have true Pioneer spirit. Their work ethic and competitive character on the court set the standard for their peers.”

Last season, Schnell recorded a 15-12 mark in singles action, including a 12-8 record while playing in the No. 2 slot. She closed out the season by winning seven of her last nine matches. Garpenlov is also expecting a strong season following a campaign in which she was named DU’s Most Valuable Freshman in 2011-12. The Tyreso, Sweden native won four singles matches and five doubles matches last season.

“I look forward to watching them exhibit great leadership which will inspire and encourage their teammates throughout the 2013-14 season,” Thompson said.

Denver women’s tennis starts its season off in Boulder, Colo. on Friday, Sept. 27 against the University of Colorado.
