Boulder – The Denver Women’s Tennis team kicked off the 2013-14 season at the University of Colorado Invitational this weekend. The event was supposed to occur at University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo., but due to inclement weather, the first day of competition, Friday, September 27, was moved to Longmont Athletic Club in Longmont, Colo.

Sophomore Kathryn Hughes (Wrexham, Wales) and freshman Maureen Slattery (Newport News, Va.) paired up to lead Denver in the doubles portion of the tournament. The duo defeated Manzi Tenorio/Quevedo (University of Colorado) 6-3, Erkeeva/Verner (Southern Methodist University) 6-2 and Surin/Araujo (Arkansas) 6-3. The Pioneers then advanced to the final where they were defeated by Janssens/Ormeno Ruiz (University of Colorado) 6-1.

Hughes and Slattery also posted singles wins in the Main Draw for Denver when the tournament continued on Saturday. The event was moved back to its original host site at the CU-Boulder south campus courts. Hughes first recorded a 6-0, 5-6 (7-1), 6-3 win over Carla Manzi Tenorio (University of Colorado) and then went on to defeat Daria Sharapova (Southern Methodist University) 6-3, 6-4. Slattery beat Yana Erkeeva (Southern Methodist University) 6-1, before Erkeeva retired due to an ankle sprain.

Another success for the Pioneers was sophomore Charlotte Derbyshire (Stockton, England) who beat Flavia Araujo (Arkansas) 6-3, 6-4 and Alex Aiello (University of Colorado) 6-1, 6-3 in the Silver Draw. Derbyshire will play in the finals of the Silver Draw on Sunday.

Also competing for the Pioneers this weekend was senior Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) who participated in the prestigious 2013 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. on Saturday.
