Pioneers Finish Strong in First Weekend of Competition
Derbyshire wins the Silver Singles Main Draw Championship

BOULDER – Sophomore Charlotte Derbyshire (Stockton, England) defeated Colorado’s Ashley Tiefel 6-4, 6-3 in the championship match of the Silver Draw during the final day of competition at the Colorado University Invitational on Sunday in Boulder.

Singles play concluded at the University of Colorado Invitational. With Derbyshire’s showing, Denver had a player advance to the finals in all three tournament draws.

“Charlotte played smart tennis all weekend,” head coach Christian Thompson said. “She worked very hard this summer and the hard work is starting to pay off for her. Going 3-0 in this tournament should give Charlotte a ton of confidence for the rest of the matches this fall.”

Sophomore Kathryn Hughes (Wrexham, Wales) had a solid weekend for the Pioneers. In the semifinals of the Gold Draw, Hughes posted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 win over Macie Elliott (Southern Methodist University) to advance to the finals. Unfortunately, the final of the Gold Draw was not played because of time limitations.

“It was nice to see Kathryn rally back after losing a tight set,” Thompson said. “Kathryn has the ability to stay aggressive even in tight situations which is key against the better players. I have high hopes for her this year going into Regionals.”

Pioneer Maureen Slattery made it to the semifinals of the Gold Draw as well, but lost to Kimberley-Ann Surin (Arkansas) 5-6 (4-7), 6-5 (7-4), 6-0, in a tight three-game match.

“Overall it was a good weekend,” Thompson said. “It was great to have three of our girls reach at least the finals in all three tournament draws.”

The women Pioneers will next compete at the ITA Regional Championship on Wednesday, October 9 in Las Vegas, Nev.
