TULSA, OKLA. – Junior Henry Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) was defeated by Brett Clark (North Carolina) 6-3, 7-5 on Monday after making it through three days of competition at the 2013 Saint Francis ITA Men's All-American Championships.
Craig had a first round bye in the tournament pre-qualifying singles on Saturday, September 28. The Pioneer then went on to beat Philipp Seifert (Rice) 6-3, 6-4 in the second round and David Biosca (East Tennessee State) 7-6 (0), 6-0 in the third round on Sunday, September 29 before facing defeat in the final round.
Freshman Alex Gasson (Alton, United Kingdom) also posted singles pre-qualifying wins. After succeeding in his first round match on Saturday, Gasson defeated Alejandro Augusto-Bueno (Clemson) 7-5, 7-6 (6) in the second round, but fell to Nick Papac (Oklahoma) 6-3, 6-2 in the third round.
Both Craig and Gasson had the chance to play qualifying consolation matches on Tuesday, October 1. Craig beat Hunter Koontz (Virginia Tech) 6-2, 6-2 and Gasson lost to J. Monteiro (Virginia Tech) 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
“This was a great tournament for our team,” DU head coach Danny Westerman said. “We were able to play a great deal of very tough matches against the best teams in the country and I was very pleased with the results. We now have two weeks to practice hard and get ready for the ITA Regional.”
DU men’s tennis will compete next at the ITA Regional Championship on Wednesday, October 16 in Las Vegas, Nev.
