Craig and Gasson Advance to Round of 16 in Both Singles and Doubles

LAS VEGAS – University of Denver Men’s Tennis duo Henry Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) and Alex Gasson (Alton, United Kingdom) have advanced to the round of 16 in both singles and doubles play at the ITA Mountain Regional competition in Las Vegas, Nev., after two days of action.  

The ITA Regional Championships started Wednesday, Oct. 16 at The Amanda & Stacy Darling Memorial Tennis Center.

After a first round bye, Craig had a strong start, defeating Semion Branzburg (University of Montana) 6-3; 7-6. In the round of 32, the sophomore battled against Odon Barta (University of Idaho) and came out on top, beating Barta 4-6; 6-1; 6-1.

Gasson also played tough in the first rounds of the tournament. The freshman beat Caio Poitena (Weber State University) 6-3; 6-3 and then went on to defeat Willie Sublette (UNLV) 6-1; 6-0. Gasson finished third-round play posting a 6-3; 6-0 win against Mitch McDaniels (University of New Mexico).

Craig and Gasson also came together to succeed as a doubles team. The pair defeated Allen/Ouvrard (University of Nevada, Reno) 8-5 and then posted an 8-7 win against Hignett/Iftikhar (University of New Mexico).

Though senior Alex Clinkenbeard (Loveland. Colo.) fell to Mitchel Knight (University of North Carolina) 0-6; 6-2; 6-3 in the first round of play, he did well in the consolation draw. The Pioneer beat Billy Bumgardner (University of Nevada, Reno) 6-1; 6-1 and Strahinja Trecakov (New Mexico State) 6-2; 6-1.

Play continues for Denver at the ITA Regional Championship on Friday, Oct. 18. In the round of 16 open doubles draw, Craig/Gasson will play Bendeck/Ramos (University of Idaho). On the main singles front, Craig faces Slim Hamza (University of Utah) and Gasson competes against Ace Matias (UNLV), while Clinkenbeard will battle Jamey Swiggart (Idaho State) for a place in the consolation fourth round.
