LAS VEGAS – Sophomore Henry Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) defeated Sam Iftikhar (University of New Mexico) 3-6; 6-3; 6-2 to win the open singles final match at the USTA/ITA Men's Mountain Regional Championships on Sunday, Oct. 20 at The Amanda & Stacy Darling Memorial Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nev. This win solidifies Craig’s spot at the National Indoor Championships Nov. 7-10 in Flushing, N.Y.

"We all had a great week of tennis especially Henry,” head coach Danny Westerman said. “He played the most mature match of his college career today and played amazing tennis.”

Craig battled through five rounds of play to make it to the final of this tournament. After a strong start on Wednesday and Thursday, Craig beat Slim Hamza (University of Utah) 6-3; 6-2 in the round of sixteen and then Garrett Patton (Boise State) 6-3; 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

In a tough Pioneer vs. Pioneer faceoff, Craig defeated teammate Alex Gasson (Alton, U.K.) 7-6; 6-1 in the semifinals to make it through to the final round.

Gasson soared through to the round of 16 after winning all of his matches in the first two days of the tournament. He then posted a 6-4; 6-4 win against Ace Matias (UNLV) in the round of 16, and a 4-6; 6-4; 6-3 win against Victor Ouvrard (University of Nevada, Reno) in the quarterfinals, before losing to Craig in the semis.

“Gasson also played great, reaching the semis,” Westerman said. “This is a great result for anyone, let alone a freshman.”

After being defeated in the first round of play, senior Alex Clinkenbeard (Loveland, Colo.) did well in the consolation draw. On Friday, the Pioneer beat Jamey Swiggart (Idaho State) 6-3; 6-4 in the third round and then turned around to defeat Willie Sublette (UNLV) 6-4; 7-5 in the fourth round just two hours later. Next, the senior posted wins against (25) Rodolfo Juaregui (Utah State) and Quentin Mege (University of Nevada, Reno) to advance to the final. Clinkenbeard battled hard against (25) Denys Pume (UNLV) for the top spot in the consolation draw, but fell 6-4; 6-2.

The University of Denver Men’s Tennis team next plays at the Minnesota Invitational on Oct. 31 – Nov. 3 in Minneapolis, Minn.

“We look forward to continuing to improve in Minneapolis in 10 days,” Westerman said. “We’re also thrilled to have Henry play at the national indoors in New York.
