CHARLESTON- Sophomore Kathryn Hughes (Wrexham, Wales) and freshman Maureen Slattery (Newport News, Va.) paired up to go 2-1 in doubles at the College of Charleston Invite November 1-3 at Patriots Point Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C.

"This past weekend was a challenge for us,” head coach Christian Thompson said. “Our opponents had all played in the NCAA Team Championships last year. Georgia, ranked No.5 in the country, had previously won the NCAA Team Championships.”

After falling to Herring/Kowase (Georgia) in the initial day of play, Hughes/Slattery came back and defeated Broomfiled/Morales (Marshall) 8-6 on Saturday and Kambourelis/Argyriou (College of Charleston) 8-6 on Sunday. Also posting doubles wins for Denver were Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Sonja Radosevic (Miami, Fla.). Schnell/Radosevic beat Rachel James-Baker/Sophie Nelson (North Carolina State) 8-5 on Saturday.

In singles, Slattery posted the most wins for the Pioneers. On Friday the freshman defeated Mara Argyriou (College of Charleston) 3-6,7-6(7),6-2. Slattery then fell to Maho Kowase (Georgia) 6-1,6-1 on Saturday before beating Liza Fieldsend (North Carolina State) (1-2) 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday.

Hughes and Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) also posted singles wins in Charleston. Hughes was victorious over Christy Sipes (NC State), winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday and Garpenlov defeated Taylor Zaytoun (NC State) (0-3) 4-6, 7-6(0), 10-7 on Sunday as well.

“I was proud especially of our growth and toughness and gains in confidence on the final day,” Thompson said. “We were able to overcome first set losses and our girls fought hard to win every match that went three sets."

The College of Charleston Invite concludes the fall season for the Denver women’s tennis team. The Pioneers will return to the courts on January 10 when they travel to the Long Beach State Invite in Long Beach, Calif.
