LONG BEACH- University of Denver women’s tennis players Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.), Maureen Slattery (Newport News, Va.), Sonja Radosevic (Miami, Fla.) and Charlotte Derbyshire (Stockton, England) claimed singles victories in the first day of play at the Long Beach State Invitational on Friday.
"It was a very solid start to the weekend going 7-4 on the day,” assistant coach David Loewenthal said. “Tomorrow will be a good test in doubles against Long Beach. We are looking forward to the challenge.”
Schnell started things off strong for Denver by quickly defeating Criss Rodriquez (CSU-Northridge) in two sets, 6-1, 6-0. Next Slattery posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over Jessica Warren (CSU-Northridge) and Radosevic beat Kristen Poei (CSU-Northridge) 6-4, 6-4. In a final singles victory of the day, Derbyshire won against Lorraine Cheung (CSU-Northridge), 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles, DU posted four wins. The team of Schnell/ Evy Van Genechten (Antwerp, Belgium) first beat Portland’s Jelena Lazerevic/Sophie Van de Arrson, 8-4. Next, Pioneers Michelle Garpenlov (Tyreso, Sweden) and Radosevic defeated Marina Reimers and Katy Krauel (Portland) 8-3. Because Denver only sent seven players, Derbyshire paired with CSU-Northridge’s Leslie Chang. The pair was victorious over Gabrielle Gorence and Emily Mahairas (Portland), 8-2.
Play continues Saturday at 9 a.m. MT at the Long Beach State Invite.
