DENVER, COLO.- The University of Denver Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams were selected as the preseason favorites to win the 2014 Summit League Championships, Summit League officials announced Wednesday.

Denver’s men entered the spring season at No. 57 and the women at No. 62 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s preseason national rankings.

In the men’s poll, Denver received five-of-six first-place votes for a total of 25 points. IUPUI received the remaining first-place vote and finished second with 19 points.

“It is flattering to be selected by the fellow coaches as the pre-season favorite,” head men’s coach Danny Westerman said. “We hope to live up to these expectations and bring home the conference championship in April and represent The Summit League in the NCAA Tournament.”

The nationally-ranked Pioneers are led by Henry Craig (Murrieta, Calif.), the ITA’s No. 86 ranked singles player, one of three returning letterwinners off DU’s 2013 WAC championship team.

In the women’s poll, Denver gathered six-of-seven first-place votes to total 36 points. The Pioneers edged out Fort Wayne, which had the remaining first-place vote and 31 points.

“We are excited to be the favorites for The Summit League conference tournament,” head women’s coach Christian Thompson said. “Last year, we were expected to win the WAC Championship and our girls handled the expectations very well. We had a lot of support last year at the WAC Championships and we will have that opportunity again hosting The Summit League Championships in April.”

DU women’s tennis returns four letterwinners off its regular season WAC championship team.

The 2013 Summit League men’s schedule begins Feb. 9 when Omaha hosts Denver. Women’s league play begins March 21 with South Dakota State at Fort Wayne. The men’s and women’s seasons culminate with The Summit League Tennis Championships, hosted by the University of Denver, April 25-27.
