Pioneers Set Record with 18 All-WCHA Academic Team Honorees

DENVER – The University of Denver placed a league record 18 members on the 2009 All-Western Collegiate Hockey Association Academic Team, announced today by the WCHA. In addition, the Pioneers also set a school record with seven WCHA Scholar-Athletes.

 

Tyler Bozak (Regina, Saskatchewan), Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia), Jon Cook (Denver, Colo.), Stephen Cunningham (Boulder, Colo.), Brian Gifford (Moorhead, Minn.), Matt Glasser (Calgary, Alberta), Dustin Jackson (Omaha, Neb.), Julian Marcuzzi (North Vancouver, British Columbia), Jesse Martin (Edmonton, Alberta), Patrick Mullen (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Chris Nutini (Centennial, Colo.),  Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta), Lars Paulgaard (Vettre, Norway), Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.), John Ryder (Colorado Springs, Colo.), J.P. Testwuide (Vail, Colo.) and Brandon Vossberg (St. Paul, Minn.) earned All-WCHA Academic Team honors for achieving a 3.0 GPA or better.

 

Cheverie, Gifford, Glasser, Jackson, Nutini, Ostrow and Ruegsegger earned WCHA Scholar-Athlete status for achieving a 3.5 GPA or better.

 

To earn a position on the annual All-WCHA Academic Team, member-team student-athletes must meet the following criteria: 1) have completed at least one year of residency at present institution prior to the current academic year; 2) have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his overall grade point average is at least 3.00 for all terms at his present institution. The conference has recognized an All-WCHA Academic Team each season since the league instituted the honor beginning in 1984-85.
