DU Plays Mississippi in NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament

DENVER - The University of Denver will compete in the 2009 Women’s Tennis Championships, announced today by the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Committee.

The No. 38 Pioneers will make its second consecutive and third overall NCAA championship appearance after earning an at-large berth.

Denver (16-5) plays No. 21 Mississippi (14-9) in the first round of the Georgia Tech Regional in Atlanta on Friday, May 8. The winner will face either host No. 8 Georgia Tech (19-5) or Jackson State (13-7) in the second round on Saturday, May 9. The winner of the second round match advances to the round of 16 held on May 15-19 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas, hosted by Texas A&M University.

Senior Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) leads the Pioneers with a 20-1 singles mark, while Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) is 16-4 and Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) is 15-5. Voelker has been named Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week twice and is ranked No. 71 in singles. Aksdal and Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) have earned a team-leading 13-4 doubles mark. Voelker and Schnoy earned All-SBC singles honors.

The teams will play a single-elimination tournament at 16 first- and second-round sites (four teams at each site) and the finals site (16-team bracket) to determine the national champion. The matches shall be regulation dual matches with three (3) eight-game, pro-set doubles played for one team point, followed by six (6) singles matches, each valued at one team point, played best of three sets.  Regular scoring will be used and a 12-point tiebreaker will be played at eight games all in doubles and at six games all in singles.
