Diversity: “The Edge that Makes Us Champions”

• We, the Division of Athletics and Recreation, define and value diversity as the physical, cultural, organizational, and social presence of race, class, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, age, disability, nationality, and religion.

• We strive to attract and retain members of historically under-represented and protected class populations as well as developing initiatives and programs designed to capitalize on the benefits of inclusive excellence for all. Our efforts are in compliance with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and align with the University of Denver’s charge to “build a campus culture that brings a vast array of backgrounds to the intellectual table”.

• In summary, we are dedicated to creating a culture that recognizes and values common goals and diverse identities while encouraging respect, understanding, and appreciation of individual and group differences.

Pioneer Community Relations Program
Student Athlete Community Outreach Programs

University of Denver administration, coaches, and student-athletes are committed to community service and civic engagement participations that directly benefit members of the Denver Metropolitan area. Pioneers are engaged in activities that are meaningful to youth, hospitalized, and deserving.

The University of Denver outreach program is a comprehensive service model designed to benefit the greater Denver community. Each year numerous activities are performed by the pioneer family.

In addition to providing positive public relations for the Athletic Department, Pioneer student-athletes are encouraged to participate in community service activities for personal and career development.

The following major community outreach activities are coordinated by the Associate Director for Diversity and Community Relations in conjunction with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee:

Citizen-Athlete Community Outreach Program

The Citizen-Athlete Program is a comprehensive service model designed to organize and coordinate community service and outreach opportunities for members of the DU Athletic and Recreation Division. “The Citizen-Athlete Community Outreach Program will develop University of Denver student-athletes into social change agents who embody the values of collaboration, commitment, and civic engagement.” These values are taken from the Social Change Model of Leadership (the 7 C’s of leadership – consciousness of self, congruence, commitment, collaboration, controversy with civility, common purpose, and citizenship).
