INDIANAPOLIS - Senior defender Drew Beckie (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was selected by the Columbus Crew with the 28th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday.

"I'm very excited," Beckie said. "I can't thank the University of Denver enough; from my teammates, to Bobby and his staff, to the administration at DU. I enjoyed every minute of my career at Denver, and now I look forward to taking that to the next level in the MLS."

Denver's senior was named to the All-West Region Second Team in December. Beckie finished his Denver career with 20 points on seven goals and six assists. After spending most of his first three seasons at centerback, Beckie played mostly outside back in 2012, tallying seven points on two goals and three assists. In 2011, Beckie was named to the All-MPSF First Team, starting all 19 matches in his junior campaign.

"I've said it over and over and over again about Drew, when you work as hard as he does, and really dedicate yourself to something, good things will happen," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "I'm excited for Drew to get this opportunity, and I know he's going to represent the University of Denver well in his professional career."

The Crew finished sixth in the Eastern Conference last season, one point out of the MLS Playoffs. Columbus, who won the MLS Cup in 2008, will not visit Colorado this season in the second year of the unbalanced schedule in the league. The Rapids will visit Columbus on May 11.

"He's going to give us some quality in the back," Crew head coach Robert Warzycha said of the Canadian centerback. "He was a guy that was on our radar before the combine, but we didn't see him too many times in college. We heard a lot about him, but he had a very, very good combine. He was very good in all three games. He was one of the best at organizing the back four, he talks a lot and squeezes the field. That's something we were looking for."

Beckie joins DU's Kyle Christensen (Chivas USA), Kris Banghart (Real Salt Lake) and Joe Willis (D.C. United) as Pioneers who have been selected in the SuperDraft, bringing the number up to four draftees in the last five years under Muuss.

"Whatever the coaching staff needs me to do, I'm going to do," Beckie said when asked what his role would be on the team. "I'll bring my physical ability and my organization skills to the team. I'll really try to fit in and learn from the older guys."
