Pioneers Win Home Opener With Season-High 195.400

DENVER-The University of Denver women's gymnastics squad posted a season-high 195.400 en route to its first two wins of the 2012 season, topping Air Force and Centenary College on Saturday night at Hamilton Gymnasium. The Falcons finished with a 190.925 and the Ladies scored a 187.250.

"The girls did a great job tonight," said head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. "I'm really proud of the character of this team."

Junior Simona Castro (Santiago, Chile) claimed her first All-Around title of the 2012 season with a 39.200. With its 195.400, the Crimson and Gold raised their season average to a 194.738.

The Pioneers held a two-point cushion after the first rotation, scoring a 48.950 on Vault. Sophomore Moriah Martin (Lake Mary, Fla.) won the Vault competition with a 9.850. Sophomore Melodie Pulgarin Linero (Barcelona, Spain) and Castro had a 9.800, and sophomore Kaitlin Moorhead (Palo Alto, Calif.) matched a career-high with a 9.800 as well.



Senior Louise Mercer (Nottingham, England) won the Bars event with a 9.850, while sophomore Emily Warfield (Lafayette, Colo.) and Pulgarin Linero each scored a 9.800. The Pioneers finished the second rotation with a 48.875.



Denver scored a 48.475 on Beam in the third rotation. The Pioneers were led by sophomore Jorie Hall (Denver, Colo.) who matched the career-high that she set at the NCAA Regionals in Magness Arena last season with a 9.900, winning the event. Castro tallied a 9.800 and Mercer matched a career-high with a 9.775.

Castro finished her night off tying a career-high on Floor, clinching the All-Around with a 9.850. Freshman Ellese Sakai-Hart (Aptos, Calif.) ended her first home meet with a season-high 9.825.  For the third time this season, Hall set a new career-high on Floor, this time posting a 9.850. Castro and Hall shared the Floor title. The Crimson and Gold set a new season-high on the event with a 49.100.


Pulgarin Linero finished second in the All-Around with a 38.750, and Mercer finished third with a 38.575. 

Denver will host Iowa State and Alaska next Saturday at 6 p.m. in Hamilton Gymnasium.
