Pioneers Upset by Stags 10-9 in Overtime

DENVER – The No. 1 University of Denver men’s lacrosse team was upset by Fairfield University 10-9 in overtime Saturday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 2,520 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The attendance was the fourth-highest in stadium history. The loss dropped the Pioneers to 10-3 on the year and 5-1 in Eastern College Athletic Conference action, while Fairfield moves to 8-5 overall, 4-2 in ECAC play.

Sam Snow found the net 56 seconds into the overtime period to give the Stags the victory.

Senior Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.) led the Pioneers with four points on two goals and two assists. Sophomore Wesley Berg (Coquitlam, British Columbia) finished with two goals and one assist, while senior Colin Scott (Ridgefield, Conn.) recorded two goals. Senior Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) tallied one goal and one assist.

Fairfield’s Eric Warden led all players with four goals. Snow tallied three points on two goals and an assist, while Colin McLinden finished with one goal and two assists.

Senior Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.) went 10-of-20 on face-offs, while Fairfield’s Michael Roe went 12-of-22.

Scott opened the scoring for the Pioneers seven seconds into the contest, when a shot from Carraro hit the post and deflected off Scott into the net. The Pioneers followed that up with goals from Berg and Law to finish the first quarter with 3-0 lead.

After being held scoreless in the opening quarter, the Stags found the net six times in the second frame. Fairfield got on the board early in the second quarter on a goal from McLinden, but DU responded with a goal from Scott to make it 4-1 two minutes into the quarter.  TJ Neubauer fired the ball past the goalie to cut the advantage to two with 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Denver bounced back with a breakaway goal from Law less than two minutes later, but the Stags tallied four-straight goals to take a 6-5 lead heading into the intermission.

Denver wasted no time in the third quarter, tallying a pair of early goals from Berg and Flint to take a 7-6 advantage 3:30 in. Fairfield retied the game with 3:50 left in the period, as Warden found the net to level the contest at seven.

The Pioneers regained the edge early in the closing quarter on a goal from junior Harrison Archer (Washington D.C.). DU followed that up with a goal from sophomore Eric Adamson (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) to take a 9-7 lead, but the Stags tallied two-straight scores to tie the game at nine with five minutes remaining. Neither team was able to find the net again in regulation, and the game headed to overtime. Snow scored with 3:04 left in the first overtime period to close the game.

The Pioneers will close out their regular season on April 27, when they host Michigan at 12 p.m. MT at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
