MORAGA, Calif. - University of Denver men's basketball fell 77-47 to St. Mary's at the McKeon Pavilion on Wednesday night.
"St. Mary's is a very good team, and they outplayed us tonight," head coach Joe Scott said. "We need to improve and learn how to win when we're not shooting well."
Junior guard Travis Hallam (Mesquite, Texas) led the Pioneers (2-7) with 12 points, tying his career high, but Denver shot just 37.5 percent (18-of-48) from the field and 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from three-point range.
St. Mary's (7-2) shot a blistering 59.6 percent (28-of-47) from the field and was led by Rob Jones' 17 points and 10 rebounds. Mitchell Young added 14 points, including 11 in the second half, for the Gaels.
Hallam tied the game early at 2-2, but the Gaels followed with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes and never looked back.
The Gaels dominated the first half, taking a 38-17 lead into halftime after hitting 15-of-27 (55.6 percent) from the field and 4-of-10 from three-point range, while the Pioneers shot just 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from the field and 2-of-12 from beyond the arc.
