Denver Athletics Unveils 2017-2022 Strategic Plan

May 4, 2017

DENVER - University of Denver Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Recreation and Ritchie Center Operations, Peg Bradley-Doppes, released the 2017-2022 Strategic Plan on Thursday. The new five-year plan will go into effect for the upcoming academic year.

The plan is part of the Division of Athletics and Recreation's mission to provide athletic, recreational and entertainment opportunities that meet the needs of students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Denver community.

In 2017, Denver will be celebrating its 150th anniversary of athletics and is the optimal time to introduce the Division's third Strategic Plan. The plan looks to align with the institution's overall strategic plan - DU IMPACT 2025. From 2017-2022, the Division of Athletics and Recreation will seek to retain the strategic success of years past and capitalize on the current momentum of Denver Athletics.

Specific areas of alignment include a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusive excellence, engagement and empowerment in the Denver and Rocky Mountain West region, the advancement and celebration of one DU, alumni engagement and a holistic approach to educating students.

The overall vision of the Pioneers' Athletics and Recreation Division is to actively create, promote and sustain an environment in which each participant is challenged and supported in pursuit of personal growth in the areas of sports, wellness and recreational activity.

The strategic plan has an eight-goal system in place which focuses on academic excellence, athletic achievement, student-athlete well-being, diversity, equity and inclusion, image and branding, engagement, customer service and financial stewardship.

Those goals include:

  • Academic excellence focusing on equipping student-athletes with the necessary resources and support to excel in the classroom during their time on campus.
  • Athletic achievement focusing on developing and maintaining competitive athletic programs at the conference and national levels.
  • Student well-being by embracing a holistic approach to health, wellness, and performance for student athletes.
  • Diversity, equity and inclusion that will focus on creating a culture in athletics and recreation that demonstrates a commitment to and leadership in fostering diversity and inclusivity.
  • Image and branding will be to continue to position Denver Athletics in the most positive manner possible, while providing quality products and outstanding "brand" recognition and media exposure for the university.
  • Engagement that advances and celebrates "One DU" through diverse programming to increase attendance, participation and revenue for the Division for overall engagement via Denver Athletics and Recreation.
  • Customer service continuing to provide an experience that exceeds expectations of fans and donors by instilling a "service above self" attitude, demonstrating a "One Division, One DU, One Nation" mentality and using data-driven feedback to develop simple solutions to ensure retention.
  • Financial stewardship that will maximize revenue streams and manage expenses to support strategic priorities.
