[RV/-] Denver Holds Pitt Without Shot on Goal in Scoreless Draw

The Pioneers held their opponent to zero shots on goal for the 24th time in their DI era

PITTSBURGH – The [RV/-] University of Denver men's soccer program and Pittsburgh played to a scoreless draw on Tuesday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

Notes:

  • Denver held Pitt without a shot on goal on Tuesday, the first time the Pioneers held their opponent without a shot on goal since October, 2024.
  • Tuesday marked the 24th time in Denver's Division I history that the Pioneers held an opponent without a shot on goal, and the fifth time in the last three seasons.
  • Pitt held a 9-6 lead in overall shots, and a 3-1 edge in corners.
  • In five meetings between the two programs, all in Pittsburgh, Denver earned its second draw at Pitt on Tuesday night.
  • Denver is now 1-1-1 vs. the Power 4 this season.
  • Dylan Akau made his 79th career appearance on Tuesday, moving into a tie with 2016 MAC Hermann Finalist Reagan Dunk (2013-16) and former captain Liam Johnson (2018-22) for eighth in Denver's DI history.
  • Isaac Nehme and Trevor Wright made their 77th career starts, moving into third in DU's history.
  • Nehme also recorded his school-record 32nd career shutout.

First Half:

18' Denver produced the first real quality chance of the night with a free kick down the right that was won by the cross of Bryce Willoughby. Luke Schultz took the free kick from 10 yards outside of the box down the right channel, and Keegan Kelly got on the end of the free kick with a hard and low header, but it was right at the goalkeeper, who controlled the rebound.
27' The Pioneers produced the second-best chance in the opening half hour as well, also from the Denver right. Kelly got the ball to the side of the box to the run of Schultz. The Denver hero from last Tuesday night played the ball to the other side of the box to the run of Dylan Akau, but the ball ran up his leg and out wide of the Pittsburgh goal.
42' Pitt's best chance of the opening 45 minutes came from 30 yards out when Santiago Ferreira found a little bit of space in the center of the park, but he skied his chance well over Isaac Nehme's goal.

Second Half:

57' Pitt took the first shot of the second half as Lasse Dahl cut in to the center of the box from the left, but his shot was once again well over Nehme's bar.
64' Denver's first opportunity of the second half came after the hour mark when Ian Welch turned Pitt over in the midfield, got the ball to David Biggers in the center of the park and Biggers got Willoughby in behind. Willoughby slipped on his final touch and his shot was wide of the near post.
74' After Denver had a good spell in possession in its attacking half, Albert Thorsen hit a rocket from the top of the box after connecting a couple of passes in the midfield, but Thorsen's ball rose just inches over the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
85' Keegan Kelly took Denver's first shot on goal of the second half and the second of the night in the match, but from a tight angle the keeper kept it out. As Pitt tried to clear it out, Denver had a shot for handball in the Pitt box, but video review confirmed the initial decision that the ball hit the defender's chest, and play continued.
88' Kelly drew a yellow card in a similar position, maybe five yards back from the Denver winner at Georgetown on Tuesday night. Schultz tried to play the same ball he played seven days prior, but this time it was wide of the far post and in behind for a goal kick.
