Ron Grahame Promoted to DU Deputy Director of Athletics

University of Denver Vice Chancellor for Athletics & Recreation and Ritchie Center Operations Peg Bradley-Doppes announced today that longtime DU administrator Ron Grahame has been elevated to the position of Deputy Director of Athletics effective immediately. Grahame will continue to supervise the Division’s 17 Division I athletic programs and will have day-to-day oversight of the Division in the absence of the Vice Chancellor.

Grahame has contributed over three decades worth of service to DU Athletics, performing an eclectic blend of duties at a high level. He was promoted to Assistant Vice Chancellor/Senior Associate Athletics Director in 2005. Prior to that role, Grahame served as the Associate Athletics Director for Intercollegiate Sport Programs and, prior to that, Assistant AD for Operations and Compliance. Grahame was instrumental in the transition of DU Athletics to NCAA Division I in 1998 and has played an integral role in the various conference affiliation shifts for the Pioneers over the years.

Most recently as Associate Vice Chancellor for Sports Supervision and Internal Operation, Grahame was responsible for all varsity sport programs for the University of Denver on a day-to-day basis. He managed student-athletes and coaches both on-and-off the playing surface while upholding the mission and goals of the Division of Athletics. 

As an elite administrator, Grahame has chaired and served on many NCAA Committees as well as local, regional & national organizing committees to bring sport to reputable locations. He has also served as the tournament director for numerous events and championship tournaments.

Grahame’s journey at the University of Denver began as a student-athlete with the men’s hockey program in 1969. As a goaltender for the Pioneers, Grahame was an All-American, earned WCHA Player of the Year honors and was named Denver’s Student-Athlete of the Year for his senior year.  Following his illustrious collegiate career, Grahame played professional hockey for eight seasons in the World Hockey Association (Houston), American Hockey League (Binghamton) and National Hockey League (Boston, L.A. and Quebec). Upon retiring from playing, he served as an assistant/associate hockey coach at DU from 1982-1990. In 1997, The Hockey News named Grahame to the 50th Anniversary All-WHA Team and he also graciously accepted his induction into the University of Denver Athletic Department Hall of Fame. In 2002, he was honored as a member of the 50th Anniversary All-WCHA Team.


 

 

In 2013, Grahame was honored with the University of Denver -Distinguished Service Award during the annual DU Founders Day Gala. The Distinguished Service Award is presented to those who have demonstrated long-term dedication and service to the University by serving as a faculty or staff member, trustee, volunteer or friend to the university.

Grahame received the division’s inaugural Unsung Hero Award for his many attributes behind the scenes to support the overall success of the University of Denver, Division of Athletics in 2015.

A native of Victoria, British Columbia Grahame is a longtime resident of the Mile High City. Ron and his wife Charlotte have two sons, John and Jason, and are also the proud grandparents of four.
