Mads Stroem Named Assistant Nordic Coach

Sept. 15, 2017

DENVER – With ski season just around the corner, head Denver skiing coach David Stewart has brought in a little more help to hopefully bring NCAA title No. 24 to the program.

On Friday, Stewart announced the hiring of Mads Stroem as an assistant Nordic coach. Stroem was previously a skier at the University of Colorado and is a seven-time first-team All-American selection and a three-time NCAA champion.

Stroem hails from Oslo, Norway and holds the CU program records for most All-American selections (8) and is tied for first-team selections. He was the 2016 Nordic Skier of the Year and sits at second most NCAA titles by any Buffalos.

“I’m fired up to bring Mads on board,” said Stewart, “He’s a three-time NCAA individual champion and has had one of the best collegiate careers ever, so he knows what it takes to put it together as a student-athlete.

I’ve seen him compete over the past four years and I know how much work he has put into his own skiing and into his team while at CU. Our sport is constantly evolving and it will be valuable to have his fresh perspective.”

With a championship winning background, Stroem will look to help improve younger skiers with his perspective.

“Coming from a great program such as CU is definitely helpful, as I have experience with RMISA and college skiing,” stated Stroem. “However, being on the coaching side is going to be different and a new challenge, which I embrace and look forward to. I hope my experience can help young skiers succeed and to win championships. No matter what place or program my goal has always been to win championships.”

Stroem will be taking over for Hakon Johansen, who left DU to help coach the Chinese national team.

“I'd like to thank Coach Johansen, for six great years coaching at DU,” added Stewart. “Hakon has moved on to a new job as head biathlon coach for China and this was a great opportunity as China prepares to host the Winter Olympics for the first time in 2022.”
