Denver Takes Commanding Lead at Summit League Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Sophomore diver Sammy Walker (Los Gatos, Calif.) became the first women's diver in DU's five seasons in the league to win a Summit League Championship and the women's program's 200 free relay made it three new school records in three relays as the University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving programs raced out to a big lead through the second day of the 2018 Summit League Championships at the Midco Aquatic Center on Thursday.

Following today's events, the men's and women's programs have now combined to win each of the last 54 swimming events at the Summit League Championships, dating back to 2016.

Walker carded a 251.95 in the 1-meter dive finals to take the top spot on Thursday. Freshman Zora Opalka (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) finished fifth after receiving a 230.60, earning 14 points for the women's program.

Follow the diving portion of the second day of the Championship, Denver's women's 200 free relay of senior Morgan Wice-Roslin (Colorado Springs, Colo.), junior Lauren Moden (Parker, Colo.), senior Morgan McCormick (Golden, Colo.) and freshman Aysia Leckie (Georgetown, Ontario) snapped the previous record by over a second with a 1:29.35.


Denver's men's 200 free relay followed that up with a victory of its own when freshman Cameron Auchinachie (Binghamton, N.Y.), sophomore Sid Farber (Portland, Ore.), redshirt freshman Stephen Calkins (Calgary, Alberta) and senior Anton Loncar (Hillsboro, Ore.) combined for a 1:18.10, an NCAA B Standard.

In the first individual swimming event of the Championships, Denver swept the podium in the 500 free. Senior Maddie Myers (Arvada, Colo.) led the trio with a 4:45.38, junior Annelyse Tullier (Dallas, Texas) took second in 4:47.05 and sophomore Andi Johnston (Fort Collins, Colo.) grabbed third in 4:49.52. Senior Karly Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), the fourth Pioneer to qualify for the A-Final, finished sixth with a 5:01.40.

Denver's men put four swimmers in the eight-man A-Final in the 500 free on Thursday, and the quartet swept the top four spots in the event. Sophomore Colin Gilbert (Kamloops, B.C.) won the race with a 4:17.72 and senior Alex Walton (Boulder, Colo.) grabbed the second spot with a 4:24.68. In a race for the final spot on the podium, sophomore Jesse Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) edged out junior Kyle Ewoldt (Gilbert, Ariz.) by 0.06 seconds with his 4:30.03 to take third.

The Pioneer women swept the top four spots of the 100 fly as well, with all four recording NCAA B Standards that were timed less than three-tenths of a second apart. Sophomore Josie Valette (Boulder, Colo.) earned the crown with a 53.20, followed closely behind McCormick's 53.33, redshirt-junior Heidi Bradley's (Victoria, B.C.) 53.40 and sophomore Kylie Cronin's (Marblehead, Mass.) 53.49.

Calkins kept the event win streak alive with a 47.75 to lead the field in the men's 100 fly. Sophomore Peter Webster (Odense, Denmark) took second in 47.98 ahead of senior Ray Bornman (Mackay, Queensland), who finished fourth with a 49.48.

Denver took back all three spots on the podium in the women's 200 IM. Junior Bailey Andison (Smiths Falls, Ontario) won the race by more than four seconds with a 1:58.09 in the event. Freshman Emily Vandenberg (Ajax, Ontario) finished second with a 2:02.18 and classmate Charlotte Simon (Saint Remy, France) grabbed third in 2:04.18. Freshman Ally Yancy (Cave Creek, Ariz.) took fifth to round out the Pioneers in the A-Final with a 2:05.36.

DU grabbed the top-four spots on the men's side in the 200 IM. Sophomore Neil Wachtler (Waco, Texas) took the top spot with a 1:48.15, followed by another NCAA B Standard from freshman Adriel Sanes (Rosharon, Texas) who clocked in at 1:48.37. Classmates Anthony Nosack (Beaverton, Ore.) and Trent Panzera (Gauteng, South Africa) touched third and fourth, respectively with times of 1:49.30 and 1:50.03.

The Pioneer women's sprinters captured four of the top five spots in the women's 50 free on Thursday in the last women's event of Thursday's program. Wice-Roslin won the sprint with a 22.55, followed closely behind Moden with a 22.79. Leckie swam a 23.14 in her first Summit League Championships to take fourth and sophomore Sarah Lingen (Maple Grove, Minn.) was scored in fifth with a 23.36.

Denver capped off its evening by taking the top four spots in the men's 50 free. Auchinachie swam a 19.45 to out-swim Farber's 19.83. Loncar touched the wall in third with a 20.49 and sophomore Hugo Sykes (Weston, Conn.) grabbed fourth with a 20.53.
