DENVER – The University of Denver men's basketball team used a late run to take down Western Illinois on Thursday, winning 70-58 at Magness Arena. The victory jumped the Pioneers’ record to 9-12 (3-4 Summit League) on the year while the Leathernecks dropped to 10-9 (1-5 SL).

DU had an all-around scoring effort with four players finishing in double figures, led by a team-high 13 from Jake Pemberton.

Joe Rosga and Daniel Amigo each added 12 points.

Kobe Webster led WIU with a game-high 22 points.

Denver got the start it was looking for, jumping out to a 9-4 lead by the first media timeout. Defense played a big role in the strong start, holding Western Illinois to just 33 percent shooting in the first five minutes of the contest.

The Pioneer lead reached double digits after a 3 from Jake Holtzmann on a beautiful feed from Rosga on the break at the 12:17 mark, snapping the junior’s nearly month-long scoreless streak.

The Leathernecks closed to within three but DU was able to extend its lead to six at the half, 30-24.

The Crimson and Gold really shared the ball well in the opening 20 minutes, dishing out eight assists on 11 made field goals.

Amigo sparked Denver in the period, scoring nine points during his 18 minutes on the court.

WIU closed to one in the opening section of the second half before a mini-Pioneer run pushed their lead back to six after a make from Holtzmann, his second from deep.

A deep 3 from Webster gave Western Illinois its first lead of the night with 10:25 left in regulation. The basket upped the freshman’s total to 14.

A three from Rosga in the corner put the Pioneers back up by three at just under seven minutes left.

The Pioneers then made their move, going on a 20-9 run over the final 6:30 to rack up the win.

A Little Assist Can Go A Long Way

DU really had it going with sharing the ball tonight, resulting in 19 assists on 25 made field goals. The Crimson and Gold are now 5-1 this year when they have 16-or-more assists in a contest.
