Men’s Basketball Falls to Bears
Joe Rosga goes over 1,000-point mark in loss
Dec. 13, 2017
GREELEY – The University of Denver men's basketball team couldn’t keep up with a red-hot Northern Colorado team on Wednesday, losing 83-63 at the Bank of Colorado Arena. The Pioneers fell to 5-6 on the year, while the Bears improved to 8-3.
Denver just couldn’t find its shot on the night, going just 42.9 percent (24-for-56) from the field.
Joe Rosga made some history, becoming the 35th member of the 1,000-point club after scoring a team-high 14 points. The St. Paul, Minn. native also grabbed seven rebounds in the loss.
Ade Murkey added a season-high nine points.
Andre Spight led the way for UNC, scoring a game-high 27 points, highlighted by making seven 3-pointers.
Both teams came out cold from the field, resulting in a 6-5 Northern Colorado edge at the first media timeout. Denver opened shooting 2-for-9 (22.2 percent) from the field, a troubling warning of things to come.
The Bears made a big move midway through the opening half with a 14-6 run that gave them a nine-point lead. DU got sloppy on offense, leading to several turnovers and extra scoring chances for UNC on the other end of the floor.
UNC used another late run to close out the half strong, giving them a 45-22 edge after the first 20 minutes of action.
Hot shooting from beyond the arc was key for Northern Colorado, going 9-for-17 from deep.
The Crimson and Gold opened the second half with a positive start, going on an 11-4 run of its own to make it a 16-point game after a 3 from Thomas Neff, making his season debut.
It was all Bears after that, pushing their lead back up to as many as 28 by way of the 3-point shot. Denver just didn’t have an answer on the defensive end for the UNC attack.
Always a Silver Lining
