Pioneers Make History in Blowout of Mavericks
Denver's 106 points most scored in a game as a Division I program
Dec. 28, 2017
DENVER – The University of Denver men's basketball team could not be stopped on Thursday night, dominating Colorado Mesa 106-60 in Hamilton Gymnasium. The Pioneers upped their record to 6-8 with the win.
The 106 points set a new Division I record for the program, surpassing the previous high of 103 at Air Force back in 1999.
Daniel Amigo led the way with a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds in just 18 minutes of work.
Ade Murkey added a season-best 11 points, one shy of his career high.
Denver had it going on to start the night, jumping out to an 18-7 lead at the first media timeout. The hot start was highlighted by easy baskets near the rim resulting in a 7-for-8 mark (87.5 percent) from the field in the opening minutes.
Amigo put on a show in the first 20 minutes of action, scoring 18 in the half with a dominating performance in the paint.
Jake Krafka turned in the highlight of the game with a nice one-handed jam at the 13:50 mark, putting the Pioneers up for good at 20-19.
Murkey had a strong performance as well for the Pioneers, who built a 22-point lead at the break and a 56-34 lead over Colorado Mesa. Hot shooting played a big part, with DU going 24-for-39 (61.5 percent) from the field in the half.
The Crimson and Gold owned the paint in the period, outscoring the Mavericks 34-6 on the inside.
In the second half, Denver kept the pressure on, starting the half with a 28-6 run, capped off by a 3 from L. Neff to make it 84-40.
Freshman Elijah Blake, making his first collegiate appearance after battling a year-long recovery from a torn ACL, got four points late and showcased his skills at the point-guard position.
Abiola Akintola dropped a career-high eight points late in the contest, including the record-setting basket that made it 104 with 2:11 left in regulation.
Denver opens up the Summit League portion of its schedule with a trip to Vermillion, S.D., for a meeting with South Dakota on Saturday. Tip is set for 2:30 p.m. MT.
