Townsend Joins Denver for 2018-19

May 16, 2018

DENVER - University of Denver men’s basketball head coach Rodney Billups announced the signing of incoming freshman Jase Townsend on Wednesday. The Dallas, Texas native signed back in November for the Pioneers.

Townsend, a Dallas native, comes to the Crimson and Gold from Skyline High School. He was a factor in Skyline’s offense this year, scoring a team-high 22.5 points, grabbing 5.0 rebounds while handing out 3.2 assists. Townsend also flashed the ability to hit from deep, knocking down 3s at a 38.6 percent clip.

“Truly excited for Jase Townsend,” Billups said. “A Dallas, Texas kid, he brings a wealth of experience at the highest level. He played for the Dallas Mustangs, a very good organization and program with good coaches. He also played for a former head coach at the Division I level in Paul Graham, a good friend of mine and of Ricardo Patton, our assistant coach.

“Jase is going to bring in a very talented offensive game. He’s a very dynamic shooter from long range that will help us continue to play fast and put pressure on the defense. I am extremely excited about Jase being a Pioneer.”

As a junior, the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 18.4 points per game to go with 4.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists. The sweet-shooting Skyline standout posted a 53 percent field-goal percentage, 85 percent free-throw percent and a 44 percentage from beyond the arc.

The incoming recruit chose the University of Denver for the excellent academics and the great relationship he had with the other members of the team and coaches.

Townsend was also being recruited by Central Michigan, UT-Arlington, Mercer, Air Force, Texas State, Arkansas-Little Rock and more.

The Skyline High standout will join an already talented incoming class that features Taelyr Gatlin, Joseph Lanzi, Alperen Kurnaz and David Nzekwesi.

Denver will return to the hardwood to begin practices in the fall.
