Pioneers Jump Up on Final Day of Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz.The University of Denver men's golf team closed out its first tournament of the spring on Tuesday, finishing tied for 16th at the Arizona Intercollegiate. The Pioneers shot a final-round 293, their best of the tournament.

DU improved every round during the 54-hole event.

Host Arizona took home the team title behind a final-round 15-under performance to jump ahead of No. 4 Texas A&M, finishing at 10-over, two strokes ahead of the Aggies.

Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Eric Hagen, Chris Korte, Jake Kelley, Jackson Solem and John Sand.



Par for the 7,292-yard course was 71.

“Today the team played hard and had a good bounce back from yesterday,” Billinger said. “I like the heart we showed today after a really tough day on Monday. We have got to take this experience this week and learn from it and continue to improve in order to achieve our goals for this spring.”

Korte bounced back after a tough opening day, shooting a 72 and 75 in his final two rounds to tie for 53rd.

Solem closed out his tournament in a tie at 56th after shooting a 2-over for his final 18 holes.

Kelley ended his tournament tied for 83rd thanks to a good showing in round three, firing a 1-over 72.

Sand took 87th after a 2-over 73 in his last run-through of the course on Tuesday.

Hagen finished up in 90th.  

The Crimson and Gold return to action for the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Springs, Calif. on Feb. 16.
