Pioneers Wrap Up Day One of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

PALM SPRINGS, Calif.The University of Denver men's golf team opened up the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Friday. The Pioneers shot a 16-over in the opening round.

Par was 72 at the 7,322-yard course at the Classic Club.

No. 19 California took a commanding lead through day one of the three-round event, finishing the day with a nine-stroke advantage over No. 9 Texas Tech.

Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Chris Korte, Jake Kelley, Eric Hagen, Isaac Petersilie and Jackson Solem.



John Sand and Roy Kang also competed, but as individuals.

“The course was in great condition and the weather for prime for scoring,” Billinger said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t take advantage of it. I know these guys will keep a good attitude and bring a fighting effort the next two days to move up the leaderboard.”

Korte led DU with a 2-under 74 in his first round on Friday. The senior from Littleton did manage four birdies on his first run-through of the course, putting him a tie for 52nd.

Kelley shot a 3-over for the afternoon, finishing off the round in a tie for 69th.

Petersilie, appearing in his first spring tournament, fired a 5-over in his first 18 holes.

Solem and Hagen each posted a 78 on their respective scorecards.

Sand shot a 79 and Kang turned in an 80.

Round two of the tournament is set for Saturday.
