PHOENIX – The University of Denver men’s golf team wrapped up the first two rounds of the Cowboy Classic on Monday. The Pioneers fired a team score of 587 (290-297), 11-over-par, that put them 12th after two rounds of play.

Chris Korte provided the highlight of the day for the tournament, making a hole in one on 15 during the opening round in the morning. The junior though wouldn’t be able to finish the second round due to illness.

Par for the 7,334-yard course is 72 at the Whirlwind Golf Club – Cattail course.

Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Korte, Isaac Petersilie, Petter Mikalsen , Jake Kelley and Eric Hagen.

“This morning we had two solid rounds of 70, 2-under-par a and 73 and we were a fourth score away from being in the lead,” Billinger said. “Chris Korte and Eric Hagen led the way. This afternoon, we unfortunately had to play with only four players since Chris got extremely ill and couldn’t play. It’s a bit of bad luck but we still could’ve had a better afternoon.

“I really liked the fact that Jake Kelley finished his morning round strong and played solid this afternoon. Tomorrow is a great opportunity for us and I’m looking for some bounce back.”

Johan Werge also competed, but as an individual.

Long Beach State sits atop of the team leaderboard through day one, posting a team score of 9-under through two rounds on Monday, four strokes ahead of the nearest competition.

Hagen had it going for DU in his first 36 holes, firing a 3-over-par for the day, including tying his season low with a 70 in the first round. The freshman sits tied for 29th.

Kelley tied for 33rd after posting a pair 73s in his two rounds on the course on Monday.

Mikalsen finished up his day in a tie for 70th after putting up a two-round total of 8-over.

Petersilie closed out his day in a tie for 82nd.

Werge, competing as an individual, wrapped up his day in 89th.

Final-round play is set for Tuesday morning with a shotgun start.
