April 11, 2017

PHOENIX – The University of Denver men’s golf team jumped up two spots on the leaderboard on Tuesday to close out the Cowboy Classic. The Pioneers fired a 291 on their final day on the course to finish 10th in the 18-team tournament.

Par for the 7,334-yard course is 72 at the Whirlwind Golf Club – Cattail course.

Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Chris Korte, Isaac Petersilie, Petter Mikalsen, Jake Kelley and Eric Hagen.

Johan Werge also competed, but as an individual.

“Lots of positives to take from this week,” Billinger said. “I am proud of Jake and Eric for stepping up. Each player has a few things they need to continue to work on in order for this team to play up to its potential. A positive attitude and lots of hard work is what we are going to do.”

UC Santa Barbara ran away with the team title after shooting 16-under on Tuesday, bringing its three-round total to 21-under, 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Kansas.

Kelley rose up the leaderboard on the last day of play, posting a 1-under 71 and catapulting up nine spots into a tie for 24th.

“The team is looking good,” Kelley said. “We are very close to posting four good scores. The guys are excited to play again this week in Iowa. We are all getting our games tuned up for this last part of the season.”

Hagen put up a 75 for a second straight round for his final day, dropping the freshman to a tie for 37th at 4-over.

Mikalsen wrapped up his tournament with a 73 for a second straight round, putting the Norway native in a tie for 66th.

Petersilie closed out his day in a tie for 79th.

Korte, coming back from an illness, went out and shot par in his final round of the tournament.

Werge wrapped up his run in 83rd after putting up a season-low 74 in his final 18 holes.

DU has a quick turnaround when it competes in the Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday in Iowa City.
